Do baby sleep apps record audio? A privacy checklist

An app can calculate a level and discard the audio while keeping the number. It can also offer playback in one tab and a separate listening feature in another. That is why a broad statement such as “uses audio” tells you too little to decide whether the behavior matches your needs.

Look for an explanation tied to the feature you intend to use. Cry detection, a live baby-monitor feed and a sound meter are different functions. Do not assume that because one feature needs a microphone, every other feature should keep it active.

Open Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Microphone to review apps that requested access. You can change permission there. Apple explains that an orange indicator means the microphone is in use without the camera; Control Center also identifies recent camera or microphone use. Apple permission guide.

That indicator tells you about access. By itself it does not prove that the app is creating an audio file or transmitting a conversation. If access appears when you did not expect it, first identify the feature that is running and stop it. You can revoke permission while you investigate.

In Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report, turn on the report if you want to inspect sensor access and contacted network domains. Apple says collection starts when enabled and the report shows activity over the past seven days. Apple App Privacy Report guide.

Use what you see to ask a precise question: “Why did the microphone run after I left this screen?” or “What is this contacted domain for?” A domain list does not tell you the contents of a network request. Equally, a short period with no observed traffic does not establish every future behavior of an app.

Read the App Store privacy label alongside the developer’s policy. Find specific answers about audio retention, local history, deletion, background use and sharing. Keep the app version in your notes because features and policies can change.

In Lullasure’s current implementation, microphone samples are processed temporarily on the iPhone to calculate sound measurements. The microphone audio is not saved as replayable recordings or uploaded. Playing bundled sounds does not itself start microphone capture. Numerical data is different from audio. Saved checks and Track session records can retain levels, dates and session information locally. The engineering laboratory feature also saves numerical samples and notes and supports deliberate exports. “No microphone recordings” should not be read as “no saved data.” See our privacy disclosure.

For your own privacy review, check what is active before handing a phone to another caregiver. End a measurement or tracking session when you are finished. If you choose to export information, review the selected destination and the notes you included.
